Even if you don't know much about IT you'll probably have heard people talking about IP addresses. Every device that connects to the internet needs one and with only just over 4 billion available they have been running out.
The system still used by most devices connection to the internet is IPv4 which is in the format 123.45.67.890 which allows a little over 4 Billion devices to connect with a unique address. The rapid growth of the internet has consumed these addresses, resulting in the birth and launch of IPv6.

The new, easy to remember address format (e.g. 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334) allows over 340 trillion unique addresses so hopefully we won’t run out in the foreseeable future!
